Dancing in the context of a commandment [ mitzvah ] — such as when one drinks wine on Shabbos and Yom Tov — or at a mitzvah wedding — or at other mitzvah-feasts — and drinks in moderation — and his intention is toward Heaven to merit the joy of Israel — to rejoice in Hashem Yisborach Who chose us from all the nations etc. — and through this he is aroused to joy until the joy draws into his feet — that is, that he dances out of joy — through this he drives away the external forces [ chitzoniim ] that have seized hold in the feet — and sweetens and nullifies all the harsh judgments [ dinim ]. And he merits to receive all the blessings. And this blazing of the dancing is: "a fire-offering — a fragrant aroma to Hashem." But one who dances with the blazing of the evil inclination — this is the aspect of: "strange fire" [Leviticus 10:1]. And the wine he drank is the aspect of intoxicating wine — from which the external forces take hold, G-d forbid.

And it is found that holy dancing sweetens the judgments — just like the pidyon nefesh [soul-redemption] that the Tzadik performs — when he places his hands upon the money called amudim [pillars] — that is, feet — [as it is written: "and the standing property at their feet" — and our Sages of blessed memory expounded: "this is a person's money etc." ] — the aspect of judgment. For akev [heel] has the numerical value of two times Elokim [two times 86 = 172]. And he draws into them the root of the judgments — Binah — to sweeten them. And this is the Name of 42 in Binah . And three times 14 numerically equals 42 — which draws in the great hand and the strong hand and the high hand there. And the Name of 42 contains seven names — each name having six letters. And one should intend to draw the vavim [hooks] to the above-mentioned pillars. And then it is called: "the hooks of the pillars and their filleting-rings are silver" [Exodus 27:10] — for through the attachment and joining of the hooks with the pillars — silver [ kesef ] — chesed — is produced — and the judgments are sweetened. And therefore it is good for a person to accustom himself to give at every occasion for pidyon to Tzadikim and G-d-fearers — in order to sweeten and nullify all the judgments upon him. That is: even when there is no trouble, G-d forbid — even so, let him give at every time for pidyon — in order to sweeten the judgments upon him so that he not come to trouble, G-d forbid.

(cont.) And this is the explanation of: "Torah scholars increase peace in the world" [Berachos 64a] — for through them the Name of 42 letters is drawn — which are the 370 illuminating lights. And with 8 whites — the numerical value of b'shalom [in peace] — the aspect of Binah ( Eitz Chayim , ch. 13–14). And the Torah scholar is called Netzach and Hod — feet — the aspect of pillars of the world — the aspect of counsels — as: "and one benefits from him counsel and wisdom" [Avos ch. 6]. ( Aitzos [counsels] has the numerical value of talmid chacham [Torah scholar] together with the letters.) And this is: "He shall give you as your heart desires" [Psalms 20:5] — when? — "and fulfil all your counsel" — through filling the throats of Torah scholars with wine — the aspect of Binah — the aspect of joy-giving wine as above — in the aspect of the heart understands [ ha-lev mavin ] — the aspect of c'lvovecha [as your heart] — which numerically equals b'yayin [with wine] with the word and the kollel . And it is considered like libations [Yoma 71a] — called all your meal-offerings (in the language of the Mishnah, Shekalim ch. 5). 📜 Translator's Summary — Toirah 41 [from the Translator] Central theme: Holy dancing with joyful intention sweetens judgments by driving the external forces from the feet ( Netzach and Hod ). This is functionally equivalent to the pidyon nefesh the Tzadik performs. Two additional parallel channels: regular pidyon payments to Tzadikim, and filling Torah scholars' throats with wine (wine = Binah = sweetening of judgments). The gematria of akev (§2): Heel ( akev ) = 2 × Elokim (86) = 172. The feet represent the domain of judgment — and drawing the Name of 42 (which is in Binah ) into them sweetens the judgment into chesed (silver = chesed). Three hands (great, strong, high) = 3 × 14 = 42. Torah scholars as the altar's feet (§3): A beautiful homiletic structure — the altar's hollow base ( shissin ) corresponds to the Torah scholar's open heart-throat. Filling it with wine (Binah) creates the cosmic libation that draws peace into the world. The Name of 42 + 8 whites = 378 = numerical value of b'shalom .
