Peace and blessing and all good forever — to his honor — my beloved, my dear — like my soul and my heart — the revered Chassid — cleaving and attached to Na Nach Nachma Nachman MayUman[הדבוק וצמוד בהננמ"ח = הדבוק וצמוד בהננ"מח — "who cleaves and is attached to Na Nach Nachma Nachman MayUman." An intensified variant of the formula from Letter 77 (הצמודים לננמ"ח): here both דבוק (davuk — cleaving) and צמוד (tzamud — attached/bound) are used together, expressing a doubled intensity of connection to the Rebbe through the Na Nach formula.] — doer of charity and lovingkindness — prolific in deeds — and so on and so on — his honor, his splendor, his glory, our master Rabbi Tzvi Yosef[כמהר"ר = כבוד מורינו הרב רבי — the full salutation honorific.], may his light shine, may G-d protect him — and all his household[כב"ב = וכל בני ביתו — "and all the members of his household."], may they live. After inquiring after your precious wellbeing with great love as is fitting. I have indeed received his precious letter — and many thanks to his honor for all this. And may the merit of the great commandments stand for you — for abundant good that is stored up — and for all your wishes for good — and all the blessings of the Torah. So may it be His will. Amen. May Hashem send me a complete recovery quickly — together with all the sick of Israel — for I suffer greatly from all sides — from my many illnesses and pains. May Hashem have mercy. It is very difficult for me to write. But it is impossible to be dismissed without anything.
Segment 3
And also what is written in Likutay Moharan: "Prayers were established to correspond to the daily offerings" [תפלות כנגד תמידין תקנום — Talmud Bavli, Brachos 26b] — and the meaning is: what the Sages said — "whoever hosts a Torah scholar in his home is as though he offered the daily offerings" [Talmud Bavli, Brachos 10b] — is this: the one who hosts a Torah scholar — who corresponds to the daily offerings — and anyone who hosts him in his home can thereby know the clarification of prayer [a mystical interpretation connecting Torah scholarship, the daily offerings, and the illumination of prayer into a single concept drawn from the Likutay Moharan]. And this is: "prayers were established to correspond to the daily offerings." And also what the Sages say in the Talmud: "Whoever loves Torah scholars will have sons who are Torah scholars; whoever honors Torah scholars will have sons-in-law who are Torah scholars" [Talmud Bavli, Shabbos 23b]. And one must also remember well what Rabbainu taught us, of blessed memory — that every single thing that happens to a person — one must know that it contains Divine Providence, and presumably everything is for good.
Segment 4
The Essential of Divine Service in Brief: Guard the Mind; Torah; Prayer; Charity; Joy in Commandments — LM §24; LH Hodaah §6 The essential: to guard the thought in the mind from evil thoughts — and all the more so from sinful musings — not to "leaven the mind," G-d forbid. This is the essential — "turn from evil." For everything is clarified through thought — and only to think good thoughts: in Torah and the service of Hashem. And also to study much Torah — the Shulchan Aruch — and the holy books of the true Tzaddik — and also Talmud and the halachic decisors. And to recite Psalms — and to engage in hisbodidus at least a little every day — and to request from Hashem that He draw us close to Him. And also to do charity and commandments and good deeds — according to what one can — for nothing remains of the person except what one "grabs" — food [this is Torah] — and drink [this is prayer and Psalms] — and garments [this is charity[אין אדם לוקח — רק אכילה שתי' ולבושים = The threefold "grab" — a beloved Breslov teaching: of all one accumulates in this world, only three things truly remain: (1) Food = Torah study — nourishment of the soul. (2) Drink = prayer and Psalms — the soul's thirst quenched. (3) Garments = charity, lovingkindness, commandments — the soul's covering and protection. Everything else — money, possessions, honor — is taken from you. Only what you "grabbed" in Torah, prayer, and mitzvos remains forever.] and lovingkindness and good deeds and commandments]. And the essential: to be joyous — for the joy of the commandment surpasses everything — and there is nothing greater than this[שמחת המצוה עולה על הכל = שמחת המצוה עולה על הכל — "the joy of the commandment surpasses everything." A central teaching of the Rebbe — appearing in LM §24 and elaborated throughout the collection. The joy experienced in performing a commandment is itself the highest spiritual achievement — surpassing even the commandment itself in significance.]. And one goes out of exile — and brings the Shechinah out of exile — and merits blessings and the blessing of the intellect — and to be included in the Infinite literally — [see Torah 24 from Likutay Moharan — and the Laws of Hodaah Law 6 — see there well well — for it is our life and the length of our days].
Segment 5
For the counsel of the baal davar is only to bring a person to sadness and depression [עצבות]. And afterward — what happens, happens. But Rabbainu, of blessed memory, taught us that one must strengthen oneself and know that ultimately it will be good. For according to my sins and transgressions — everything that G‑d, blessed be He, does with me is also beyond the strict measure of justice. When I estimate for myself the greatness of my iniquities — I fall into very great sadness. But this is my consolation in my affliction: that I know of such a great Tzadik who can certainly save — only one must yearn and long to come to him [to Uman, to Rabbainu's grave]. And this is what Rabbainu, of blessed memory, said: [Yiddish:] "I have drawn you out from the teeth of the samech-mem [ס"מ — the Samech-Mem, or Samael: the angelic force of evil and accusation]. And if one were to slaughter your evil inclination — the channels would be full of blood. But at least — since we know of such a Rebbe, everything can be rectified, and everything can come right. And it will certainly all come right. May G‑d, blessed be He, have compassion — that we merit to come there, to pour out the bitterness of our heart — then it will certainly all be good." [Hebrew parenthetical:] (I drew you out from the teeth of the Samech-Mem. If one were to slaughter your evil inclination — the channels would be full of blood. But at least — since we know of such a Rebbe — everything can be rectified, and everything can come to its place. And it will certainly all come to its place. May G‑d, blessed be He, have compassion — that we merit to come there, to the place, to pour out the bitterness of our heart — then it will certainly all be good.)
Segment 6
I ask of you once more: immediately upon receiving my letter — fulfil my request without any delay whatsoever. For I am waiting on this. And you can send it to me in a registered letter [רעציפסט — from German Rezepisse: registered mail, with confirmation of delivery]. And if you do this — then I will reward you with good letters. From me — who awaits to hear from you good tidings, salvations, and consolations. And may G‑d, blessed be He, give you livelihood in great abundance.
