(לז) פעם אחת עמדנו לפניו בלילה ודברנו עמו הרבה מכמה וכמה תורות שגלה לפנינו [אשר עתה כבר נדפסו כלם אבל אז עדין לא נדפסו ספריו], והייתי מזכיר לפניו איזה תורות והייתי מפליג לפניו עצם שבח הפלגת חדושיו. וכן כמה וכמה תורות, כי כל תורה ותורה היא חדוש נפלא ומפלג מאד מאד אשר תכלה הנפש מעצם ערבות והפלגת החדוש, למי שזוכה לעין בהם באמת. והיינו מדברים הרבה מזה, אחר כך למחרתו בבקר נסעתי עמו ללוותו בדרך.
ענה ואמר, אתמול הנחנו וסדרנו הסחורה שלנו [שקורין קראס] ברוך השם היא סחורה יפה מאד מאד. וטוב היה שיהיה לחנות זה משרת טוב ויפה שיכול להניח ולקפל ולסדר כל חתיכה סחורה יפה יפה עם הקצה לחוץ (כדרך המשרתים המבחרים שמקפלין הסחורה ומניחין קצת לחוץ כדי שיראה הקונה בבואו תכף מהות יופי הסחורה), וכשיבוא אחד לקנות איזה סחורה יוכל המשרת לחטף מיד בזריזות אותו המין סחורה שצריך הקונה, ויפתח אותו במהירות לפני הקונה ויהיה מראה לו מיד הוד יופי פאר הסחורה הטובה הזאת. והנמשל מובן שצריכין אחד שיהיה בקי היטב מאד בכל תורותיו שגלה שיוכל לסדר כל תורה יפה יפה עם הקצה לחוץ. וכשיבוא אחד וירצה להתקרב ולדבר מתורתו יוכל להושיט לו מיד איזה תורה שהוא צריך אז כפי ענינו. כי כל תורותיו הם כלליות גדול מאד מאד שיכולין למצא בהם מה שצריך כל אחד ואחד, רק צריכין אחד שיהיה בקי בהם היטב היטב שיוכל להושיט לכל אחד ואחד מה שצריך באותה העת. והבן השאר מאליך:

(37.) Once we stood before him at night and spoke with him much about the many Torah discourses he had revealed to us [which now have all been printed — but then his books had not yet been printed]. And I was mentioning before him some Torah discourses and greatly extolling the immensity of the praise of the vastness of his novelties. And likewise many Torah discourses — for every single Torah discourse is an exceedingly wondrous and vast novelty — with which the soul is consumed from the immensity of the sweetness and vastness of the novelty, for one who truly gazes into them. And we were speaking much about this. Afterwards the next morning... I traveled with him to accompany him on the way.
He answered and said: "Yesterday we emptied out and arranged our merchandise [called kras] — blessed be Hashem, it is very, very beautiful merchandise." And it is good that there be a servant [for such a shop] — a good and fine servant who can lay out and fold and arrange every piece of merchandise very beautifully with the edge outward (in the manner of the choicest servants, who fold the merchandise and lay a bit of it outward so that when the buyer comes he sees at once the very essence of the beauty of the merchandise). And when someone comes to buy some merchandise, the servant can snatch at once, nimbly, the very kind of merchandise the buyer needs, and unfold it quickly before the buyer, and immediately display to him the splendid beauty and glory of this good merchandise.
The parable is understood: one must be very well versed in all his Torah discourses that he revealed, so as to be able to arrange every Torah discourse very beautifully with the edge outward. And when someone comes wanting to draw close and to speak from his Torah, one can hold out to him at once whatever Torah discourse he needs at that time, according to his situation. For all his Torah discourses are very, very great generalities, in which each and every person can find what he needs — only one must be very, very well versed in them, so as to be able to hold out to each and every person what he needs at that time.
