(144.) I heard how one of the younger young men was sleeping in Rabbainu's z"l room. Once he approached Rabbainu z"l and began to weep before him — since he wanted to be a proper man. And Rabbainu z"l was already lying in his bed. And Rabbainu z"l stood up and sat on his bed — and began to speak with him, and showed him the way in this. And he also commanded him certain studies to study. And he also commanded him that he should be maarei de'chushvena — meaning that... ...meaning that every night before he would lie down in his bed, he should reckon how the day had passed with him. If he had studied and prayed properly that day — he would thank Hashem Yisburach and say to Him praise and thanksgiving "for Your great and holy name — that You have granted me to study and to pray yesterday according to Your will somewhat. And I supplicate before You, Hashem my G-d, that You help me tomorrow, the coming day, to add very much in Your service in Torah and prayer — and with most complete intention. And if, G-d forbid, he had not studied and prayed properly the previous day — he would give thanks and supplicate before Him, may He be blessed, and say: "Master of the Universe — I know that I have transgressed this day and have not served You properly, neither in Torah nor in prayer etc. And now I seek and supplicate before You etc. — that You forgive and pardon me for the past, that I did not serve You properly. And help me tomorrow, the coming day, to serve Your service in Torah and prayer with the proper intention and wholeness, according to Your will."
