All words are the aspect of powers of judgment [ gevuros ] — and they must be sweetened. And the sweetening comes through Torah study and good words that one speaks. Therefore one must guard one's speech greatly and not speak evil words — and in particular slander [ lashon ha-ra ] — G-d forbid. And all the more and more so — one must guard greatly from speaking — G-d forbid — against the Tzadik of the generation. So that the judgments not overpower — G-d forbid. And through these evil words — one can cause the Tzadik of the generation to fall from his level — G-d forbid — when he does not have the great power to sweeten these hard powers of judgment. [And the sweetening comes through judging them to the scale of merit — those who speak against him. Or through receiving with love the sufferings of those who speak against him. But if he does not have the power to sweeten them — then he is compelled to depart. That is:] — or he departs [completely] — G-d forbid — through this. And then through his departure — his soul sweetens these above-mentioned powers of judgment. (And it is understood that if even so he strengthens himself at the time of the fall and rises from his descent — they are also rectified through this. And descent is the purpose of ascent — as is known.) Or he falls from his level — which is also the aspect of death.]
[When one speaks against oral Torah in general — or when one speaks against the Tzadik of the generation — it is literally one and the same matter. For the primary oral Torah depends on the Tzadik of the generation. And likewise the Tzadik himself is the Torah — as our Sages of blessed memory said [Makkos 22b]: "how foolish are those" etc. But when the Tzadik sweetens their words — he returns and makes Torah out of the words — and teaches it to others. Which is the aspect of the Torah of kindness [ toras chesed ]. And through this he sweetens them completely.] 📜 Translator's Summary — Toirahs 141–207 [from the Translator] Major themes across this large section: Teshuvah through the heart (T141): Genuine circumcision of the heart in Elul causes a spiritual chain reaction — one's own teshuvah awakens teshuvah in all the souls that ever flowed from him. The yearning heart as Torah (T142): One who cannot learn — but whose heart burns with longing — draws directly from the supernal heart where the conversations of distant Tzadikim are recorded by G-d. The longing itself is the learning. Faith as the growing power (T155): Sadness and laziness come entirely from deficiency of faith. Complete faith makes a person impervious to obstacles — long-suffering and ever-growing. Torah in the atmosphere (T159): Torah that cannot ascend to the Shechinah falls and scatters through the air of the world. The worthy absorb it as innovation and renewed yearning; the unworthy absorb it as thirty-nine labours of this world. The Tzadik and the soul's lost objects (T188): Every person was taught everything before birth — and forgot it all upon entering the world. The Tzadik holds all these lost objects. Traveling to him is traveling to recover what was always one's own. The Tzadik's speech (T192): Hearing Torah from the Tzadik at the moment of its innovation creates indelible memory. The Tzadik's face, intellect, and soul are received with his words. Even a secular remark from the true Tzadik exceeds Torah from another Tzadik — for it is pure truth with no admixture. Expansion within affliction (T195): Every trouble in the world contains within itself some expansion. The task is to find it — for this enables one to bear everything and always draw close to G-d from within any situation. The ten Psalms (T205): One of Rebbe Nachman's most famous practical teachings — the ten chapters of Psalms as a rectification for nocturnal occurrence. Each chapter is specified. The lost sheep (T206): A profound and urgent prayer — cry out while you still remember the voice. For once far enough away, the voice is forgotten entirely and the shepherd too despairs.
