(יא) פעם אחת נשמע שהקיר"ה שלנו רוצה לגזר חס ושלום כמה גזרות על ישראל (שקורין פונקטן). ונשמע אז שגזרה אחת מהם הוא שיהיו חס ושלום ישראל מכרחין ללמד בניהם חכמות ולשונות. ואמר רבנו זכרונו לברכה שעל גזרה זאת צריכין לגזר תענית, ולצעק ולזעק להשם יתברך יותר מעל כל הגזרות. כי גזרה זאת היא צרה גדולה מכל הצרות ורעות שבעולם, כי על ידי זה חס ושלום מעבירין על דת לגמרי. כמו שרואין בחוש בעוונותינו הרבים, שכל מי שנכנס בדרך הזה יוצא מן הדת לגמרי. השם יתברך יחוס על עמו ישראל ויציל פלטה הנשארת מהם ומהמונם.
פעם אחת אמר רבנו זכרונו לברכה, אוי ואבוי שאין אנו חושבין כלל בשביל בנינו ודורותינו איך להצילם ממים הזידונים הרעים האלה הרוצים לשטף את העולם חס ושלום, שהם דרכי הלמודים הרעים של חכמות ולשונות ופילוסופיה המתפשטים עכשו בעוונותינו הרבים בעולם בכלליות וגם בין היראים בפרטיות וכו':

(11.) Once it was heard that our Tsar wanted to issue, G-d forbid, several decrees against Israel — called punktn. And it was heard then that one of them was that Israel, G-d forbid, would be compelled to teach their children secular sciences and languages. And Rabbainu o.b.m. said that for this decree one must declare a fast and cry and scream to Hashem Yisburach more than over any of the other decrees. For this decree is a greater trouble than all troubles and evils... For through this, G-d forbid, they are brought entirely out of the faith — as one sees plainly, because of our many sins, that everyone who enters this way leaves the faith entirely. May Hashem Yisburach have mercy on His people Israel and save the remnant (pleita) remaining from them and from their multitude.
Once Rabbainu o.b.m. said: "Woe and alas, that we do not think at all for the sake of our children and our generations — how to save them from these bad heretical waters (hazonim) that want to wash over the world, G-d forbid — the bad ways of study of sciences and languages and philosophy, which are spreading now, because of our many sins, throughout the world in general, and also among the G-d-fearing in particular, etc.":
